Decide what's authoritative first

Before writing any code we establish which system owns each field. Skipping this is why integrations end up in loops where two platforms endlessly overwrite each other.

Assume every dependency will fail

Third-party APIs go down, change without notice, and lie about their rate limits. Everything we build queues, retries with backoff, and can be replayed from a durable log, so an outage becomes a delay rather than lost data.

Reconciliation, not faith

Every pipeline gets a periodic check that both sides still agree, with discrepancies reported. Integrations drift; the only way to know is to keep counting.

Documented for whoever comes next

Field mappings, transformation rules, credential rotation, and failure runbooks written down. Undocumented integrations are the most common form of key-person risk we find.
